Trey Pounders: The Basics of Food Safety

Trey Pounders, the owner of Compass Concepts and a leader at Green Box and Southern Grocery Company, fully understands the importance of food safety, as it can be the difference between getting sick or not. Contrary to what many might think, food safety is not just for restaurants, as following safe food handling standards, such as the following, is important in our own homes as well:

  • Always collect your refrigerated and frozen items last when you are grocery shopping, as staying out too long may be just enough time for unhealthy bacteria to begin growing.
  • After preparing food, store within two hours, or one hour if the temperature is above 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Make sure that containers are sealed tight to avoid leaks, and meats should be wrapped securely to avoid any juices dripping on other food items.
  • While cooking, be careful not to mix cutting boards and utensils that you’ve prepared raw meat on with other foods. Cross-contamination can cause lots of health problems, so be sure to set them aside or wash immediately after.

Trey Pounders is passionate about offering consumers new ways to purchase and think about fresh, beautiful food.
